Snow and rain in Jammu & Kashmir at the start of next week will bring down the above normal day temperatures in the region. Compared to last year, many places in the state are experiencing warmer days this December.
For instance, in Srinagar, the average day temperature during the first 18 days of December has been around 12.7 degrees. While the average maximum during the same period last year was recorded to be 9.1 degrees. The historical average day temperature for Srinagar in December is 8.8 degrees.
Srinagar, after recording a lowest maximum temperature of 7 degrees on 11th of December, has not witnessed similar day temperatures till now. But last year, during the same period the city saw the maximum temperature fall below 7 degrees on six occasions with 3 degrees being the minimum.
The absence of winter rain and clear skies in Srinagar are responsible for the rise in day temperatures. Last year Srinagar had recorded 12 mm of rain and snow with the highest being 10. 3 mm on 14th of December due to a Western Disturbance.
Qazigund has recorded an average day temperature of 13.2 degrees this year compared to 8.3 degrees in December 2012. Kupwara is witnessing an average day temperature of 13. 4 degrees as opposed to 9.3 degrees last year. Pahalgam is also witnessing warmer days this year with an average maximum of 11 degrees compared to 6.9 degrees last year.
