The eager wait for season’s first snowfall in Srinagar has finally ended as fresh snowfall lashed the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir today morning. Since early morning 6:00 am, Srinagar received light rain coupled with sleet that picked up as the morning approached. By 8:30 am, joyous residents started to feel the fresh snowflakes on their palms.
The much awaited snowfall has come after a long break as the city failed to witness any snowfall during December and till mid-January.
Besides Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Kargil are some of the other places that received snow this morning. Due to the snowfall, minimum temperature of these places have shown a rise by 2-3°C in last 24 hours.
Snowfall in Srinagar has been caused by western disturbance that is moving across Jammu and Kashmir.
Western Disturbances become frequent since the beginning of January however they are short-lived. These systems have a short span of life, usually for 1-2 days and offer short spells of rain. Due to its movement from west to east, these systems are known as Western Disturbances.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, once this western disturbance clears away, there is another western disturbance expected to come over Jammu and Kashmir region, giving some more rain and snow during the first week of February.
