Floods, snowfall, avalanches affects life at the paradise on Earth
The so aptly called ‘Heaven on Earth’, Kashmir has been wearing the brunt of unsettled weather conditions from past two to three days.
From incessant rains that have created misery in Kashmir thereby leading to flash flooding to heavy snowfall resulting in avalanches, the Valley has been hammered by Mother Nature badly.
On one hand, heavy rains lashing the Jammu and Kashmir region have caused River Jhelum to even cross the danger level mark thereby resulting in flash flooding in various regions of the Valley. While, at the same time, the upper reaches of Kashmir has seen hefty snowfall leading to avalanches and killing Indian Army personnel.
As per Skymet Weather, snowfall in April is not a very common scenario in Kashmir. But all this happened due to the Western Disturbance that has affected the Western Himalayan region. In the wake of this weather condition, the state Government has declared shutting down of schools in the valley till Sunday.
The snowfall along with incessant rains have also forced the closure of the National Srinagar-Jammu National Highway as well causing the travelers stranded. As many areas in Srinagar are water-logged, the election campaigning in Jammu and Kashmir has also been affected by these intermittent rain and snow.
Moreover, no relief from floods and rains is expected until the next 48 hours.

Weather conditions in Srinagar had become quite pleasant during the last week. So much so that some areas were observing above normal temperatures. In fact, the maximum temperatures had even settled above the 20-degree mark on a few occasions.
However, not only rain but even snow gods decided to give the heaven on earth a visit yesterday. The capital city of Jammu and Kashmir had been witnessing good rains for the past 48 hours. In fact, a day before 28 mm of rainfall was recorded.
Meanwhile, during the last 24 hours, the prevailing Western Disturbance which is currently over the Jammu and Kashmir region and its adjoining areas resulted in a snow show over the state capital. Srinagar witnessed snowfall in the month of April which is not a common sight to be seen.
Fresh spell of snow was not only recorded in Srinagar but other parts of the valley as well. The higher reaches of the Kashmir valley witnessed moderate to heavy snow in the last 24 hours.
The last three days have been rainy for Srinagar. The spell of snow yesterday has forced the authorities to close schools as well as colleges until at least April 10. Inclement weather conditions will keep the students at home for this week.

Snowfall in April over Srinagar may not be unusual but it is a rare affair. Usually, during the month of April, the frequency of Western Disturbances reduces to quite an extent. Not only this, even if the systems affect the hills, they are feeble and do not result in severe weather over the region.
