The national capital received sporadic monsoon showers in the past 24 hours. While the base observatory at Safdarjung recorded a mere 3 mm of rainfall, the airport observatory at Palam witnessed moderate showers amounting to 32 mm of rainfall. Delhi University, Ridge and Pusa observatories also had similar recordings with rainfall ranging between 35 mm and 38mm. Some other stations missed the event in total, as well.

The monsoon trough is positioned south of Delhi and such rainfall distribution is quite normal. A low-pressure area over South Odisha and Chhattisgarh has dragged the trough south of its normal position. As the system weakens, the trough will have tendency to shift northward. The relocation of the trough may increase the weather activity over the next two days. Moderate showers are likely over Delhi/NCR tomorrow and the day after. Courtesy, another weather system is forming over the Bay of Bengal, and the trough will oscillate yet again. The spread and intensity may shrink on the 19th and 20th July.

Mercury levels will hover around mid-30s during the day and mid-20s during the early morning. Persistent cloud cover with small breaks in between is likely. Sultry conditions will dominate the weather pattern. The shifting of the second low-pressure area over land around 20th July will change the wind stream all along the Indo-Gangetic plains. The trough will have the tendency to come closer to Delhi with possible cyclonic circulation embedded in the close proximity of Delhi. This will enhance the chances of decent weather activity, both, in terms of space and time, commencing by the end of this week. Typical monsoon showers are expected on the coming Sunday and spilling over to the start of the next week, as well.
