Sporadic Hailstorm Activity Over Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh

Peak pre-monsoon activity is coming up over many parts of the country over the next 10 days. The atmospheric profile becomes very conducive for hailstorm incidents as the temperatures plunge exorbitantly below freezing point in the higher tropospheric levels. Heat in the lower levels triggers the updrafts and carries moisture to the higher levels. Icy cold enclosure inside the tall cloud clusters freezes the water vapours quickly and the crystals grow rapidly to turn into hailstones.

Many parts of the country have already witnessed severe pre-monsoon activity. Hailstorms and gusty winds have lashed Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, West Bengal and a few other pockets this season. Crops in over one lakh acres have been damaged earlier during this month on account of unseasonal and untimely rains and hailstorms in Maharashtra. Nashik, Pune, Jalgaon, Ahmednagar, Nanded and many other places faced the fury of inclement weather conditions. A recent onslaught of intense hailstorms, last Sunday, in Odisha inflicted heavy damage to the crops.

Multiple  systems are joining together to lash widespread pre-monsoon sensitive weather activity over many parts of the country. Over the central parts, the trijunction of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will be at risk of ruinous stormy activity for a prolonged spell between 26th April and 04th May. Vidarbha & Marathwada in Maharashtra, East Madhya Pradesh and South Chhattisgarh will be more vulnerable to heavy rains and intense hailstorms accompanied by strong gusty winds during this period.  Spread and intensity will worsen between 30th April and 03rd May.  Major relief can be expected only after 05th May.
