Northeast Monsoon 2020

The Northeast Monsoon is likely to become active and lash all the 5 sub-divisions with decent showers lasting for 4 days. The rains could be heavier at few places over Kerala and South Interior Karnataka including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya, Kochi, Munnar, and Thiruvananthapuram. These good showers may even extend to parts of Tamil Nadu like Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, Thanjavur, Kodaikanal, and Udhagamandalam. The other two sub-divisions of Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh will also receive light to moderate rains.

The Northeast Monsoon had set in on 28th October over Tamil Nadu to start with and covered the state of Kerala later. The other parts have experienced limited weather activity and the overall status of the mini monsoon has remained subdued. However, conditions are building up to enhance the scatter and intensity as well. Good showers are likely between 03rd and 07th November.

A cyclonic circulation is persisting in the Bay of Bengal off Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka coast. This feature will be causing waves in the easterly stream along and off the coast. Also, the pattern is supported by another circulation over Maldives-Comorin area. Under the joint influence of these features, the northeasterly stream is going to energize over the South Peninsula. As such the Northeast Monsoon activity happens in spurts lasting for 3-4 days and accordingly this spell will prolong till 07-08 November.
