Southwest Monsoon has not been active over Punjab since the beginning of the four-month-long season.
Through out this Monsoon season, Punjab has not received fairly widespread rains. Places like Amritsar and Chandigarh have received on and off rains but Monsoon-like showers were missing. Accordingly, the rainfall deficiency mounted to 24% in Punjab.
The weather condition is now changing and we expect good rains to commence over Punjab from August 6. The rainy spell will continue for about 3 to 4 days, with short breaks in between.
The upcoming spell of rainfall could be attributed to a fresh Western Disturbance approaching Jammu & Kashmir and adjoining Punjab region.
At present, the axis of the Monsoon trough is running across North Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. It can be seen moving across Bikaner, Sawai Madhopur, Satna, Ambikapur, and further up to the Bay of Bengal. This trough will shift north, towards northern parts of Haryana and Punjab. The interaction of this trough with the Western Disturbance will bring fairly widespread rain over Punjab. We cannot rule out few heavy spells of rainfall over Punjab and the hills of Uttarakhand.
By the end of next week, rainfall deficiency will decrease to some extent over Punjab. This spell of rainfall will be quite beneficial to crop lands.
