Updated on August 28, 2015: Southwest Monsoon gives rain over Assam, Odisha
Owing to a low pressure area over Bay of Bengal, parts of East India have been observing moderate rain in last 48 hours. While coastal parts of Odisha have been witnessing heavy to moderate rain in last two days, other parts of East India such as Chhattisgarh has also observed active Southwest Monsoon in last 24 hours.
Significant weather has been observed in parts of Northeast India including Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura as heavy rainfall occurred at isolated places in these areas.
Monsoon in India is slated to remain active for next couple of days as it is likely to give moderate rainfall over parts of Central India including Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
Updated on August 26, 2015: Countrywide rainfall deficiency to reduce soon
Southwest Monsoon that was giving subdued rainfall across India is likely to pick pace in next 24-48 hours as the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal intensifies. The weather system has started to influence weather over coastal Odisha and Andhra Pradesh and is expected to move towards central parts of the country in next couple of days.
Due to moderate Monsoon rain, countrywide cumulative rainfall deficiency is also expected to drop from 11%. Country’s rainfall deficiency has been rising in last few days due to absence of significant rainfall.
As the weather system moves inland, it will give rainfall of varying intensity over Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and some parts of Northeast India.
Updated on August 25, 2015: Southwest Monsoon to revive after 48 hours
After a smooth June and rainy July, August remained satisfactory for Southwest Monsoon that came to a screeching halt during the last week. The steady march of the rainfall across the country took a short haul, thereby increasing the cumulative countrywide rainfall deficiency to 10% from 9%. However, according to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, Southwest Monsoon is expected to enter its active phase once again over central and eastern parts of India after two days.
Even though the forecast for next two days is not encouraging as Monsoon is likely to remain subdued due to absence of any significant weather system, subsequent week is expected to bring good news as a low pressure area is likely to brew in the Bay of Bengal, moving inland after 2- 3 days. This system will give rain over West Bengal, coastal Odisha followed by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Under the influence of this low pressure system, some parts of Peninsular India will also receive rain where the intensity of rain is going to reduce in next two days. This moderate to heavy rains from August 26 onwards is expected to bring a dip in cumulative deficiency that will be arrested at 10% or rise marginally in next 48 hours.
Performance of Monsoon so far
Southwest Monsoon gave good rains from August 16 to August 21 due to which countrywide cumulative rainfall deficiency was stuck at 9% for 5 days. Thereafter, rainfall activity subdued and country received rain that was half than the normal. The trend is likely to remain similar for next two days as well. During August 16 to August 21, Northeast India was the only region that received good rains which was 5-6 times than the normal.
From June 1 to August 23 the country received 589.6 mm of rain against the average of 655.6 mm. About 73% of the total area consisting of 24 sub-divisions observed normal or excess rain.
