Southwest Monsoon remains vigorous over Coastal Karnataka, Konkan and Goa

The West Coast of India witnesses vigorous rainfall activity during the onset phase of Monsoon, in fact throughout the month of June. Furthermore, Coastal Karnataka and Konkan & Goa in the West Coast are the rainiest pockets. Rainfall in these areas depends on the following two major factors:

Monsoon systems

Firstly, any weather system formed in the Bay of Bengal or the Arabian Sea pulls the Monsoon current. Consequently, the Monsoon surge increases and the West Coast becomes the favoured pocket for rainfall activity.

Off-shore Trough

The off-shore trough extending from Gujarat to Kerala also becomes a semi-permanent feature. Consequently, places like Honnavar and Mangalore receives more than 1000 mm of rainfall in the month of June. The monthly average for Honnavar is 1033 mm and Mangalore 1045 mm. To reach these figures, these places should practically receive rain every day.

These pockets have been receiving vigorous rainfall activity since the onset of Monsoon on June 5. However, we are half way through the month of June and the cumulative rainfall figures in these places are still much below the average. Till date Honnavar has received 380 mm of rain and Mangalore 390 mm.

Rainfall Forecast

As have been mentioned above, the Monsoon systems accentuate rainfall activity in Coastal Karnataka and Konkan & Goa. At present, we can see a weather system coming up in the Bay of Bengal, which could give even triple digit rainfall in just 24 hours. Moreover, the off shore along the Western Ghats is also active and will continue to bring good showers over the area.

Here’s a look at rainfall records (in millimetres) in Coastal Karnataka and Konkan & Goa from June 13.
