After a long wait, Southwest Monsoon has finally made an onset over Mumbai. The city had been receiving good rains for the past 24 hours and on and off rains are expected to continue in the coming days. Widespread rain has also been recorded over other parts of Maharashtra.
Though the normal onset date of Southwest Monsoon over Mumbai is June 10, there has been a delay of about ten days this year. Usually, Southwest Monsoon, during its onset, covers most parts of Maharashtra outside Vidarbha. In fact, Vidarbha is the last to receive Monsoon rains.
However, this year the onset occurred in a reversed order and Monsoon current penetrated Vidarbha first and subsequently covered parts of Marathwada. Furthermore, Monsoon covered entire Konkan and Goa including Mumbai during the last 24 hours.
Most of the time, Monsoon makes an onset over Mumbai with a bang. In fact, even before the arrival of Southwest Monsoon, the city receives heavy Pre-Monsoon showers. This year, Mumbai remain parched during the first ten days and only received 37 mm of rain on June 11. Subdued rainfall activity was observed over Mumbai all throughout June.
Also, the latest spell of rain was moderate in intensity with both the Santa Cruz Observatory and Colaba receiving 34 mm and 41 mm rain, respectively. Though the spell of rain was prolonged in nature, typical heavy Mumbai rains were not witnessed over the city.
In the coming days, the possibility of heavy downpours for long durations is highly unlikely. However, on and off rains will continue over the city. Also, sharp showers for short durations may occur over some parts of the city.
Weather conditions will also improve significantly. Strong breeze, overcast sky conditions, and high humidity will raise the comfort levels and keep the scorching heat far away.
