The Southwest Monsoon that has withdrawn from West Rajasthan, parts of Punjab and West Haryana, is likely to stay put in India and witness a delay in its withdrawal from rest of the Northwest India. Defying its usual withdrawal date of 15 September, the Monsoon in India is likely to take another week to begin its withdrawal from Delhi-NCR, Punjab and other parts of Northwest India.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division of India, the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon, would be further delayed by at least five more days.
Monsoon is currently active over many parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and some areas in the Northeast India. This activeness is due to the low pressure area that has been persisting over Bay of Bengal for last few days. The system is likely to intensify further and become well marked low pressure area in next 24 hours. Due to this system, easterly winds are prevailing over Indo-Gangetic plains lying in India giving rise to humidity levels.
Out of the several criteria for withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon, couple of them are not likely to be in place during this week. Firstly, the humidity levels are not expected to dip in next one week and there is possibility of rain over plains of North India around September 20 – September 21.
Owing to the above mentioned reasons, Monsoon in India is likely to take some more time before it starts to retreat from national capital city and adjoining areas.
