Southwest Monsoon continues to bring rain in Kerala, Karnataka

June 5, 2014 1:48 PM |

Commensurate with its characteristics, onset of Southwest Monsoon over Kerala has resulted in good amounts of rainfall over most parts and fairly heavy in some pockets. As is expected, the rain belt advanced further to cover Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Ratnagiri.

As said earlier by Skymet, Southwest Monsoon continues to bring rain in Kerala but the intensity has decreased in last 24 hours. Here’s a look at significant rainfall figures on the 4th of May, recorded by Skymet’s weather stations installed in Kerala-

  • In  Thiruvananthapuram district, Kulathoor recorded 12.5 mm, Venganoor 12 mm and Kalliyoor-Pallicha 9.2 mm of rain.
  • In Kozhikode district, Perambra 5 mm, Koduvally 27.2 mm and Bepore 12.5 mm of rain.
  • In Kannur district, Taliparamba recorded 18 mm of rain and Chalode 6 mm.
  • In Thrissur district, Koorkkancherry recorded 14 mm and Thanniyam 5 mm of rain.
  • In Ernakulam district rain was minimal with Chendamangalam, Nayarambalam and Pampakuda recording 0.3 mm of rain.

Few places in Karnataka like Belgaum (20.8 mm), Bijapur 36.6 mm, Honnavar 17 mm, was also lashed by good showers in the last 24 hours.

Model data available with Skymet Meteorology Division in India, indicates that rainfall may go down in the next few days and pick up later on account of a monsoon system likely to come up in the Arabian Sea.

Temperature profile across South India also shows a dip, as is expected with the onset of Monsoon. Telangana in particular observed a drastic drop in temperatures on Monday, by about 9° to 10°C. Here, mercury levels were recording close to 40⁰C until last week. Temperatures did rise with decrease in rainfall but they are still below normal.
