This year, the Indian Metrological Department has predicted normal monsoon over the country. In fact, many other agencies across the world have predicted normal monsoon. However, Skymet did not release its monsoon forecast due to some strategic reasons.
Progress of Southwest Monsoon 2020 during the first half of June:
The performance of Southwest Monsoon 2020 until now is steady and good. The forecast of normal monsoon is turning out to be correct. Monsoon made the onset over Kerala on May 30th. Thereafter its progress remained very satisfactory. Monsoon made steady progress between June 10 and 15. Almost every day it has progressed and covered some more parts of the country. The western arm of the monsoon covered Maharashtra and reached the central part of Gujarat. whereas its Eastern arms have covered entire North East India, West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and has reached East Uttar Pradesh as well.
Southwest monsoon has covered Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and has reached central parts of Madhya Pradesh. Monsoon has reached over central Gujarat before time. Now the wait is for the monsoon to cover the whole of Madhya Pradesh as well as Eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh in the coming days.
Performance of Southwest Monsoon 2020 during the first 15 days:
Places where monsoon has reached between June 1st and 15, have received normal or above-normal rains. Pan India is a rainfall surplus by 31%.
Central India recorded 94% surplus rainfall, north and northwest India recorded 19% surplus, south India also recorded 20% surplus rainfall. But East and North East India are still deficient by 4%.
Although the monsoon has not reached North India, the rain activities between June 1st and September 30th are calculated as monsoon rains. The progress of monsoon and its performance has been very satisfactory until now. In the coming days also, we expect that monsoon progress will remain satisfactory.
Monsoon 2020 has already covered major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nashik, Surat, Ahmedabad, Indore, Jabalpur, Raipur, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Guwahati, Patna, and Ranchi.
Now, Bhopal, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Delhi, Ludhiana, Patiala, Ambala, Karnal, Srinagar, Dehradun, Shimla, and Dharamshala are waiting for the onset of monsoon.
