Southwest Monsoon 2019 finally marked its onset over Kerala during the last 24 hours after a delay of almost one week. Now, conditions are also becoming favorable for the advancement of Southwest Monsoon into southern parts of Northeast India during the next 48 hours.

Until June 8, Kerala was rain deficient by 63 percent but since the last 24 hours, fairly widespread moderate to heavy rain and thundershower activities are occurring over parts of Kerala. So now, we expect the rain deficiency of Kerala to go down or come near normal. In fact, in the wake of such widespread rains, the state may also become rain surplus in the coming one week.

In the last 24 hours from 08:30 am on Saturday, Alappuzha recorded 66 mm of rain, followed by Thiruvananthapuram 32 mm, Trivandrum 28 mm, Kochi 23 mm, Punalur 12 mm and Kottayam 5 mm.

These widespread weather activities will occur in association with a low-pressure area that has developed over the Southeast Arabian Sea. This system will further intensity into a well-marked low-pressure area and move in north/northwest direction along the west coast.

Due to this weather system, strong southwesterly winds are reaching over most parts of Kerala leading to an increase in moisture and subsequent cloud development and heavy rainfall activity. These heavy rains are expected to continue for another four to five days.

Weather Alert: Moderate to heavy rain and thundershowers with lightning strike at isolated places will occur over Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kollam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur and Wayanad the districts of Kerala during the next 48 hours.

In the wake of such widespread heavy rains, there are chances of a flood-like situation in parts of Kerala during the coming days. Gradually when the weather systems will move towards Karnataka and Maharashtra Coast, rain intensity in Kerala will start decreasing, but still on and off rains will continue till June 16.

Thus, we can say that the onset of Southwest Monsoon brings heavy rains over most parts of Kerala. Although these heavy downpours will not lead to extreme flood like situation like last year, still precautions must be taken to avoid any such situation.
