Southwest Monsoon 2016 active over Honavar, Karnataka

June 10, 2016 1:21 PM | Skymet Weather Team

On Thursday, the Monsoon line was passing through Honavar, leading to very good showers to the tune of 68 mm in just 24 hours. Before that the city had received 69 mm of rainfall.

In fact, good showers are going on over the region since June 4 but the intensity has picked up during last 48 hours. We expect moderate to heavy Monsoon showers over the region as Monsoon has made further advancement.

This is not uncommon as Honavar has received more than 100 mm of rain in 24 hours about 8 times, during the last 10 years. Only 2014 and 2015 have missed the 100 mm mark. This could be due to failed Monsoons.

The monthly mean in this city is also quite high in June (1032.6 mm) and July (1190 mm). The all-time high 24-hour rainfall record set by Honavar is 466.3 mm, on June 13, 1988.

In fact, most of the stations of the West Coast receive very heavy showers in the Monsoon season. Kozhikode, Kannur, Mangalore, Agumbe and Karwar are among the other rainiest places along the West Coast.
