South India observed heavy rainfall on Wednesday, particularly parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the southern peninsula is witnessing significant increase in rain as the Northeast Monsoon is active over the region.
In a span of 24 hours, Coonoor in Tamil Nadu recorded 93.2 mm of rain, Palayankottai 61 mm, Chennai 35 mm and Kodaikanal both observed 34.9 mm of rain. In Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram observed 53 mm of rain, Kannur 29.2 mm, Kottayam 17.8 mm, Kochi 9 mm and Punalur 6.4 mm.
This spell of rain has also extended and covered some more parts of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
Nellore in Andhra Pradesh continued to witness heavy rain for the second day with 58 mm of rain. Ongole and Machilipatnam also received light rain of 1.4 mm and 0.4 mm, respectively. While, Mangalore in Karnataka recorded 8 mm of rain.
According to Skymet, the spell of rain will continue over the region and is expected to extend further along the west coast. In the next couple of days, Northeast Monsoon might give rain over some parts of Konkan and Goa, North Interior Karnataka, Madhya Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
However, heavy rain will be confined to Kerala and west coast, while Tamil Nadu might witness decrease in rainfall.
The Northeast Monsoon, usually remains active till the first fortnight of December and starts withdrawing thereafter. Rainfall reduces drastically over southern peninsular region and becomes minimal by the third week. However, southern parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu still receive some rain.
