Snowfall activity over the Western Himalayas commenced very late this winter season. January also was disappointing enough with the deficiency mounting over 90 percent over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

However, during the month of February, almost all the hilly states witnessed hefty rain and snow between February 11 and 13. Thereafter, the weather became dry. There have been frequent Western Disturbances after that, but they have only given rain and snow over the higher reaches.

Now, good news is around the corner as another active Western Disturbance is approaching Jammu and Kashmir. This weather system is expected to give moderate to heavy rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh but Uttarakhand will only witness light to moderate rain and snowfall activity.

As per Weathermen at Skymet Weather, the weather activity is expected to lash the states from the night of February 23 and is likely to last until February 25. The intensity of rain and snow will be more on February 24 as compared to February 25.

All tourist destinations such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Quazigund, Leh, Manali, Kullu, Shimla, Rohtang Pass, Mussoorie, Auli, Dhanaulti and Nainital are likely to witness good rain and snowfall activity. In fact, Vaishno Devi is also likely to observe rainfall activity.

In the wake of these weather phenomena’s, Jammu Srinagar highway may again get blocked. In fact, there are chances of landslides and mudslides over the region as well. Hence, the tourists heading for a snowy weekend are advised to take precautions and avoid the Jammu Srinagar highway.

During, that time, the day and night temperatures are anticipated to decrease and will settle below normal. Therefore, the weather during the day would be cool and nights will remain chilly.

Normally, after snowfall ends, the probability of avalanches also increases. Therefore, there is a possibility of an avalanche in the upper regions of the state. Hence, skiers are advised to not venture out in the snow after February 25.

The upcoming snowfall activity will be a blessing for the irrigation of apple crop over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh as it helps in its growth. Moreover, snowfall will aid in the restoration of water flow in the rivers of Ganges and Yamuna which are originating up from the hills.
