Western disturbances are likely to move in quick succession across the northern mountains over the next 8-10 days. Light to moderate snowfall, becoming heavier in between will be the highlights. The lofty peaks of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh have been blanketed white, drawing tourists in large numbers. More snow is likely to get stacked. A western disturbance is presently over Jammu and Kashmir as a well-marked cyclonic circulation. However, the impact is largely confined to the hills and the plains will just have a partly cloudy sky. There is another western disturbance, nearly overlapping the current one, and moving across between 04th and 06th Jan. The spread and scale of this system will be larger than the current one.
Western disturbances have given a snowy push to the mountains in the new year. The activity is likely to be non-stop for the next about 10 days, barring a small pause for a day or so. The upcoming western disturbance on 04th January will have an induced cyclonic circulation over North Pakistan and the Punjab region. The intermittent snow will continue between the 04th and 06th of January, becoming heavier on the 05th Jan.
There could be a brief pause for a day on 07thJan before the next system arrives on 08thJan. This is likely to be an intense system and will have induced circulation over the plains. It is rather too early to pre-empt its detailed influence, but suffice to say, that plains will see a large spread of winter rains around the next weekend between 10th and 12th Jan. Prior to this, a light and scattered spell is likely over parts of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi between 05th and 06thJan.
Due to the increase in the weather activity, the wind pattern will change over the plains. The cold snap across the slopes of the mountains will get arrested and the easterly stream will take over. This will raise the night temperatures across the northern plains. Still, the temperatures are likely to hover around single digit and occasionally and briefly touch double-digit mark.
