With the onset of winter season, the hills of North India become special attraction due to the occurrence of various weather activities specially snowfall. Along with snow, the winter chills and immense beauty of the Western Himalayas also makes the tourists leave their homes and travel towards the hills.

However, most people prefer traveling to the mid-level hill stations such as Kullu, Manali, Shimla, Nainital, Mussoorie, Dehradun etc. which lie between 6000 to 7000 ft. The main reason for this is the easy and convenient travel, time and capital.

Meanwhile, talking about other famous tourist attractions such as Leh-Ladakh, Kedarnath, Badrinath and many more. People rarely travel to these place’s, in fact maybe only ones their lifetimes.

Snowfall activity is seen over most of the hill stations of North India during the second half of December. This period also lies around Christmas and New Year’s, which makes it another occasion to travel to these beautiful hill stations.

But this year, snowfall made its appearance quite early, as first on November 3, Srinagar witnessed snowfall activity then on November 12, widespread snow was observed over several hill stations in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Currently, as no active Western Disturbance is seen over the Western Himalayas, weather activities have also taken a break over the hills of North India and no snow has been recorded since then.

Let’s talk about the three very famous hill stations of India: Srinagar, Shimla and Manali. All these places observe different weather aspects in terms of rain, snow and temperatures.

The average night temperature in the month of December are as follows: Srinagar 4˚C, Manali -1.6˚C and Shimla – 0.1˚C. In fact, mostly these locations witness sub-zero night temperatures during the month of December.

Srinagar - All days in December observe minimums in minus except when there is a Western Disturbance and clouding occurs. During that time, night temperatures tend to increase.

Manali – Here most of the days in December witness minimums below 5˚C and sub-zero temperatures for about 15 days.

Shimla – It is very rare to see sub-zero temperatures in Shimla. However, during December the night temperatures here remain mostly in single digit.

Thus, we can say that comfortable weather conditions are witnessed over all these places during the day and nights are chilly. At times due to the sun, days also become quite warm but after sunset a sharp drop is experienced in the from of chilly nights.
