Snowfall to continue over Shimla, Srinagar, Manali, Nainital till Jan 27
Tourists enjoying their long weekend in any of the hill stations of North India cannot ask for a better snow spell. In last 24 hours from January 24 08:00 am, the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir have received hefty amount of rain along with snowfall.
Banihal recorded a hefty spell of rain and snow of 52.4 mm, Gulmarg received 87.2 mm, Kupwara recorded 35.8 mm, Qazi Gund recorded 39.2 mm of rain and snowfall. But such heavy spell of snowfall is not always good news. According to many reports around 4 people have been buried alive in a snow avalanche in Gurez sector.
In Himachal Pradesh, Chambal and Kapla stations witnessed good rain and snowfall of 24 mm. Manali received a hefty spell of rain and snowfall of 63.2 mm. While very light rain was seen over Shimla. In Uttarakhand, very light rain and snowfall has been recorded. With cloud cover over the state, heavy rain and snowfall can happen in the next 24 hours.
This heavy spell of rain and snowfall over the hills of North India is attributed to back to back western disturbances and this weather activity is likely to continue over the region till January 27. Thereafter the western disturbance will move away.
Snowfall commences over Shimla, Srinagar, Manali, Nainital
From the looks of it, snowfall over the hills of India have commenced again. The fresh spell of snow was observed over many places across Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
At present many areas near Srinagar are witnessing good snowfall. Srinagar, Qazi Gund, Gulmarg and many other higher reaches of the state are having good snowfall. In Himachal Pradesh, cloud cover can be seen with cold weather. At present, Kullu-Manali is witnessing good rain and snowfall. With cloud cover more stations of the state like Dalhousie and Khajjiar can witness rains with snowfall any moment now.
Even Shimla can witness snowfall soon. Chances of snowfall are favorable over the hills of Uttarakhand. Nainital, Munsiyari and Mukteshwar are the areas that will witness rain and snowfall any moment now.
This snow spell over the entire hilly region will continue up to January 27. So the Republic Day celebrations over the many regions of the state may not be possible.
Since the start of January, all the major popular destinations of the North India have been witnessing continuous spell of snowfall. From the looks of it, more is in store for some of the popular hill stations. At present, a fresh western disturbance has approached Jammu & Kashmir and already light rain and snow has commenced over many parts of the state.
This snowfall will intensify by tomorrow and simultaneously another western disturbance which is at present over Northeast Pakistan and Afghanistan will approach Jammu and Kashmir.
This system will give good rain and snow over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh by January 25.
These two western disturbances will continue to affect most of the hills of North India till January 27. Heavy to extremely heavy snowfall is possible over Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.
These upcoming western disturbances may bring the heaviest snow spell over the region. With such heavy snowfall over the region, the Jammu-Srinagar highway is very much likely to be inaccessible around January 26-27.
Chances of avalanche are also possible so tourists and residents are requested to take precautionary measures and not venture out in the open.
