The month of December remained mild for the hills of North India. So much so that only a couple of rainy and snowy spells were observed over both Jammu and Kashmir as well as Himachal Pradesh along with areas in Uttarakhand.
However, as we entered January, weather conditions witnessed a fortunate change with rain and snow lashing many parts of the hills. In fact, during the first few days of the month of January, widespread rainfall and snow was recorded over several popular hill stations of North India including Shimla and Srinagar.
The last 24 to 48 hours have also been rainy and snow enough with many areas receiving good rain and snow. During the last 24 hours from 8:30 am on Monday, 33 mm of rainfall was observed in Manali along with Shimla where 8 mm rainfall was recorded.

In fact, many hill stations including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Shimla, Srinagar and Manali witnessed some snowy spells the day before. Higher reaches of Uttarakhand also witnessed rain along with some snow.
Now, during the next 24 hours, more rain and snow is expected over these areas as back to back Western Disturbances are likely to affect the Western Himalayas throughout the month of January. In fact, on and off rain and snow is expected to continue over the hills of North India during January.
