After some continuous snowfall since last couple of days, the daily life of Srinagar has come to a standstill. The fresh spell of snowfall has slowed the life again by hitting road and air traffic.
From early morning hours of yesterday the snowfall started and till today the snowfall is going on without fail. Due to such adverse weather the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway was closed due to complete blockage of road with ice. Along with roadways, many flights were cancelled. Many areas of the city are without electricity and sufficient water supply.
After assessing the situation, the Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) has advised the government to issue an avalanche warning for the hilly areas of Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, Tangmarg and Khilanmarg in the Gulmarg sector. Even the higher reaches of Kargil frontier region of Ladakh have been flagged off as unsafe.

Due to such adverse snowfall, Kashmir University has suspended classes till January 29.
Candidates who were unable to appear for the interviews of Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission got relief when the commission announced fresh dates for candidates.

Due to back to back western disturbances, more snowfall is expected during next 24-48 hours over most of hills of North India. In fact, on and off rain and snow is expected to continue over the hills of North India throughout January.
