January 22, 2015 6:03 PM | Skymet Weather Team

There is something amiss about Srinagar’s snowfall this season. It missed the date with Christmas, New Year, mid January and now it looks bleak as the harshest winter period in Srinagar comes to an end.

Though according to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, appearance of any snowfall in Srinagar can be hoped during the first week of February when another western disturbance passes through North India.

Srinagar that has been eagerly waiting for season’s first snowfall, observed sleet followed by rain since today morning. It has rained 4.4 mm so far. Due to rain, maximum temperature in Srinagar has observed a drop as it settled at 10.3°C today against the 12.3°C yesterday. Minimum or night temperature has witnessed a reasonable rise as it is not below sub zero in Srinagar.

Snowfall is not just an attraction for tourists thronging Srinagar but essential for the residents of Srinagar as it leads to proper water supply in the summer season. The chances of snowfall are maximum and most frequent during the period of December 21 – January 30.

According to Skymet, Jammu and Kashmir will witness an extended wet spell till January end. With a slight break during 24th-25th January, rain is again expected to lash the hilly state. Hopefully, this prolonged wet spell may be followed by snow in Srinagar.
