Snowfall and rain in Jammu & Kashmir is likely to reduce from today onwards as the Western Disturbance has moved out of this region.
Several places in the state including Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Kupwara, Banihal, Batote, Bhadarwah and Qazigund witnessed snow and rain that led to fall in night temperatures in the last couple of days. Pahalgam received 18 mm of snow, followed by Banihal 15.8 mm and Qazigund 13.8 mm on Monday.
Residents in the summer capital Srinagar remained mostly indoors as it continued to receive snow and rain for the third consecutive day on Monday. Srinagar recorded 1.8 mm of snow and rain during the period. The Jammu-Srinagar national highway has remained closed since Sunday and is expected to open today onwards, for one way traffic. Two girls lost their lives in Gurez sector due to an avalanche (An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a sloping surface) on Sunday .
Meanwhile, weather in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand remained dry as there hasn't been any snowfall or rain in the last 24 hours. Shimla is experiencing clear weather after snow and rain on Sunday that led to rise in day temperature. The city recorded 9.6 degrees (more than the Sunday's maximum of 3.1 degrees) to settle around 12.7 degrees on Monday.
According to our forecast, the next round of snowfall and rain in Jammu & Kashmir will depend on a new Western Disturbance (a low pressure area originated in the Mediterranean Sea and adjoining Atlantic Ocean) expected from the 26th of December.
