Post Monsoon, Western Disturbances are the main sources of precipitation over Western Himalayan region and northern plains of the country. In fact, frequency of these disturbances starts increasing gradually October onwards.
At present also, a Western Disturbance has now started affecting the region. The system which was earlier over North Afghanistan and Pakistan has now moved eastwards and currently lies over North Pakistan and adjoining areas of Jammu and Kashmir. This weather system has already given moderate to heavy rains over northern parts of Pakistan.
Meanwhile, scattered rains were experienced in parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Currently, multi-level clouds can be seen over Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. These clouds have middle level bases that form anywhere from near surface to 2400 m and tops that can extend into the high-altitude range. Such type of clouds is responsible for precipitation over wide area.
So, due to this, we can expect light to moderate rains in parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh to continue. It can also result in snowfall in the upper reaches of these two states in the next 24 hours. The intensity of rains will not be much, thus, posing no danger for the pilgrims. The weather will also get cool and pleasant.
Devotees who are planning to seek blessings of Goddess Durga can also plan their visit as weather would not hinder the pilgrimage. However, temperatures at Vaishno Devi Bhawan will be lower than the plains.
The moment Western Disturbance makes a shift in east direction by October 10, weather will then become dry over the hills. Day temperatures are expected to increase by 2-3 degree Celsius and minimums will see a dip by 2-3 degree- Celsius. Thus, nights will become cooler and days will be warm.
