Snowfall expected in higher reaches of Jammu & Kashmir

December 14, 2013 2:03 PM|

A feebleWestern Disturbanceover Jammu & Kashmir is expected to bring isolated rain and snow in the higher reaches. In view of this system, north westerly winds blowing over the plains extending up to Rajasthan and Gujarat will become colder. Some clouding can be observed overJammu& Kashmir, Punjab and Haryana.

As we enter the second half of December, indications for a chillywinter in Indiaare showing up in terms of shallowfogand single digit minimums at several places. Day temperatures in the northern plains have come down to low twenties. Today,Amritsaris at 23 degrees Celsius, Lucknow at 22.7 degrees Celsius and Patiala at 22.6 degrees Celsius, with marginal rise expected in the next 48 hours. Minimums recorded in the northern plains are still one of the lowest of the season with Leh at (-14) degrees Celsius and Srinagar at (-3.7) degrees Celsius.

We are still awaiting a stronger system to set in the bone-chillingwinter in North India. As predicted earlier, we expect frequent Western Disturbances to sustain the present chill in entire North India from now on. The present Western Disturbance will show up in the plains only in terms of marginal rise in temperatures and poor visibility due to shallow patchy fog.

The national capital woke up to a pleasant Saturday morning. Shallow fog was witnessed in the morning with visibility of 700 meters, but a mainly clear and sunny day lies ahead forDelhiites. The minimum temperature recorded at Safdarjung on Saturday morning was 8.2 degrees Celsius, while at Palam it was 9.2 degrees Celsius. In next 24 hours only marginal change is expected.
