The hills are bearing the brunt of extreme weather conditions back at North India. Since last many days it’s been continuously snowing in the Himalayas, in very short gaps. The recent snow and rainy spell was from February 4 to 8.

At present, a lot of snow has accumulated on the hill-tops with one after the other weather activities. Moreover, when topped with shiny sun, the chances of snow woes multiply manifold.

Jawahar Tunnel Avalanche

Recently a total of seven people lost their lives when snow came gushing over a police station in Kulgam district of Kashmir. Only three out of the ten trapped could be rescued. The avalanche had hit the north portal of Jawahar Tunnel on the Qazigund side on February 7, blocking one opening of the tunnel.

The rescue operation is in process for recovering the remaining policemen trapped under the snow and is being carried out by policemen and other concerned agencies. Apart from this, a high-level warning has issued for avalanche-prone areas of the state as there are chances of even more avalanches in the coming days.

Jammu-Srinagar Highway remains blocked

While avalanches are on a round for the hills, the trio hilly states are also witnessing highway blues. Many roads lie blocked either due to snowfall, avalanches or landslides. Moreover, the very busy Jammu-Srinagar Highway lies blocked for straight four days as of now.

Over 1,500 vehicles, mostly trucks carrying essential supplies remain stranded at various places on the highway such as Kathua, Banihal and Ramban. A few casualties have also been reported in landslides in Ramban district.
