It seems as if snow has opted to stay away from Srinagar this winter. After denying the city and its people a white Christmas, snow ditched Srinagar even on new year's eve. Each year, tons of tourists converge to Srinagar in the month of December, hoping for a snowy white Christmas. Snow showers usually add to the beauty of this scenic location, and allow its residents as well as visitors to welcome the new year, amidst a white cover of fresh snow. But that has not been the case this winter.
Generally speaking, the state of Jammu and Kashmir receives snowfall any time after September. The higher reaches get snow in the post southwest monsoon period however, the lower reaches have to wait till mid December. But there have been cases of light snow showers even in November but the most preferred period for snowfall in Srinagar continues to be around Christmas and New Year. In the last three years, it has consistently snowed in Srinagar during this time. This year, however, places like Shimla, Nainital, Mukteshwar, and others received snowfall ahead of Srinagar which has not received any snow till date.
Srinagar last received rain showers on November 7, 2014 with traces of rain on November 28. Now, a fresh western disturbance (WD) is expected to cause snow showers in the higher reaches between 4th to 5th January. But then, it may or may not bring snow to Srinagar and the city may have to wait a little longer in order to experience its first snow of the season. Whereas snow is likely to be experienced in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
