Snow and rain lashes parts of Jammu and Kashmir

After witnessing long dry spell, the last leg of January brought good rain and snow over the northern hills of the country. In fact, the initial days of February also brought on and off rain and snow. All thanks to the back to back Western Disturbances that have affected the hill states of India.

Most of the popular tourist attractions were covered under the white quilt of snow. The higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir including Gulmarg, Qazigund, Leh and Kupwara were engulfed with snow. After lashing the northern hills with snow, the weather of the region went on to become dry once again during the last couple of days.

As per Skymet Weather, the feeble Western Disturbance which was affecting Western Himalayan region has now moved eastwards and is seen over Jammu and Kashmir as an upper air cyclonic circulation. In the wake of this weather system, parts of Jammu and Kashmir including a few areas of Himachal Pradesh have received light rain and snow.

However, this system is now likely to move towards northeast. Hence, there could be a decrease in the rain and snow activity over the northern hills particularly over Jammu and Kashmir after 24 hours.

Furthermore, after the passage of this weather system, another fresh Western Disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayas soon. This would also result in scattered rain and snow over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir along with some light snow spells over the plains of the state including Vaishno Devi.

Himachal Pradesh is also likely to observe few light rain and snow with the arrival of the fresh Western Disturbance.

Skymet Weather further reiterates that in the forthcoming time, the frequency of Western Disturbances will reduce as compared with those during the month of January and February. Moreover, their intensity and strength is also lesser than those during the extreme winter months and therefore, they would pass by very quickly not affecting the region much.
