Delhi and the NCR region has been facing the smog terror for the past two days. However, it has not been an unusual scenario for Delhiites. Every year, during this time, Delhi witnesses a few scary days when the city is blanketed with a white cover of smog which does no good to anyone at all.

So much so that it brings along with it several respiratory issues. The worst sufferers are the children and the elderly as they are the first ones to feel the effects of the degrading air quality.
For the last two consecutive days, the skies of Delhi and the NCR region were filled with smog and pollution levels reached sky high levels. The Indian Medical Association (IMA) declared a state of health emergency after monitoring the situation on Tuesday. Primary schools have been ordered to be shut till Monday as the situation sees no improvement.

But what caused the Delhi smog? What made Delhi so unlivable this time?
Dense fog has been making appearances over the Pakistan region. During the afternoon hours, Westerly northwesterly winds have been blowing at the speed of 10-15 kmph. Thus, these winds have been bringing in the fog from the region towards Delhi and the NCR region.
Along with this, these winds have also been bringing in the pollutants from Punjab and Haryana where stubble burning is in full swing.

Since winds are light in nature, the pollutants have settled in the atmosphere. Along with this dense fog has also been wreaking havoc. The combination of fog and smoke haze has resulted in the formation of smog.
This weather condition is expected to continue for some more time. The situation will not improve unless the northwesterly winds strengthens and takes the pollutants away. Thus, Delhiites will continue to choke.
