Updated on November 27, 2015: Even as winter waits for a little while before making an entrance into Delhi-NCR, its notorious shortcoming, smog, is already on its way. As temperatures begin to take a dip, exhaust fumes from the capital’s vehicles have started to combine with construction dust and mass burning of agricultural waste from the neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana in order to produce a lethal mix called smog.
Due to persistent clouding and cool southwesterly winds, day temperature of Delhi-NCR has come down and will remain below than the normal for next 2-3 days. Wind speed is also very low at 5 kmph. This mixed with high humidity is leading to formation of smog near the earth surface, thereby reducing visibility significantly.
Delhi is already reeling under an alarming situation of air pollution which is touted to be fatal by 2025, claiming almost 30,000 lives. Even as Delhiites wait for the winter chill to set in the national capital city, there is also a fear of surviving in the breathless winter in Delhi where air pollution levels are very high.
Given the present weather conditions, smog is likely to linger for some more days that may bring misery to people suffering from respiratory illness.
