Skymet's Meteorology Division in India explains variation in minimums across northern plains

February 20, 2014 1:38 PM |

According to Skymet's Meteorology Division in India, the weather has been cloudy across the northern plains. We can blame it on the feeble Western Disturbance in the northwestern plains playing along with the cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan. The night temperatures are showing variations accordingly.

A senior meteorologist of Skymet's Meteorology Division explains that with early clearance of clouds, there is a tendency of minimum temperatures to drop, provided other factors like winds bring in the chill factor.  Likewise, the night temperatures have dropped in Punjab and Haryana but risen in Rajasthan. In Chandigarh, today the minimum dropped to 10.4°C from 11.1°C the previous day. Similarly in Ambala, the temperature dropped from 10.9°C to 9.8°C. Amritsar witnessed a drop from 7.5°C to 5°C, today morning. Karnal and Patiala also saw a drop in minimums.

Howeevr, medium to high clouds hovering over Rajasthan lead to a rise in minimums as the clearance of clouds took affect later in the morning. In Jaipur the temperature rose from 9.7°C on Wednesday morning to 13.5°C on Thursday. Here’s a list of temperatures of some major cities of Rajasthan:-

Places Minimum on Thursday (in °C) Minimum on Wednesday(in °C)
Ajmer 12.4 11.2
Kota 12.4 10.6
Jodhpur 11.2 8.8
Churu 9.1 7.4

As per the latest weather update, the weather condition in India has improved today but clouds will make a comeback by Friday evening. East Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi/NCR, Uttarakhand, west and central Uttar Pradesh are likely to receive light rain from Friday night to Saturday. Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh will not be affected much by this weather change.
