Acclaimed weather scientist Mrutyunjay Mohapatra also known as the ‘Cyclone man’ took over as the Director-General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday.

54-year-old Mohapatra took the reins from K.J. Ramesh, who headed the India Meteorological Department (IMD) since 2016.

IMD in the last decade or so has made some accurate and early predictions for Cyclone Phailin, Hudhud, Vardah, Titli, Sagar, Mekunu and Fani. Huge credit goes to Mohapatra who was at the helm of affairs of the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre (RSMC), Tropical Cyclone, since 2008.

Mohapatra received the maximum acclaim for making timely and accurate predictions for Cyclone Fani in May. During the event, IMD was on top of its job in forecasting the severity of Fani and issuing alerts. Timely and accurate alerts by IMD helped the government ensure adequate preparedness. Fortunately, there was very little loss of life and property and IMD earned accolades from the United Nations for their impeccable forecast.

Under Ramesh and Mohapatra the forecasting of severe weather events by IMD improved by using coupled dynamic models and high-performance computers. And we expect this to get better with IMD adopting newer technologies every year.
