Deaths have been reported in districts including Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Jharsuguda, Jajpur, and Kendrapara. In fact, between April 1 and June 23, more than 150 people have lost lives due to lightning strikes.

On July 28, a similar incident occurred in Bihar which claimed three lives. The same region was hit by a lightning strike on July 5 wherein 5 people were killed. In fact, on July 9, 2016 a GoAir Kolkata-New Delhi aircraft (G8 102) with 180 passengers made an emergency landing at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). The flight was hit by lightning which caused a cracked windshield in the aircraft.

Such incidents not only occur in India but a lightning strike incident in the United States had caused an American Airlines Flight 4233 make an emergency landing at JFK.
In India, most number of deaths are reported due to lightning strikes as compared to any other natural disaster.
