Like March and April, May is also expected to record excess rainfall with pre-monsoon activity reaching its peak. Though the month has started on a warmer note, a series of rainy spells is expected to make a comeback on account of fresh Western Disturbances, cyclonic circulations and wind discontinuity across the country.
According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the weather models are indicating that the country will be once again observing a rainy month, with fairly good chances of surplus rainfall.
As we enter the month of May, rain activity becomes more intense along with increased thundershowers. The monthly rainfall average increases from 36.5 mm in April to 62.3 mm of rain in May.
This year, both March and April recorded surplus rainfall. As per the data available with Skymet, out of 36 sub-divisions in the country, 31 sub-divisions ended with excess rainfall while the leftover five sub-divisions recorded normal precipitation.
During March, most parts of the country recorded above normal rainfall barring regions of East and Northeast India where rainfall was in deficit. However, this deficiency was covered up in April as the entire country witnessed good rainfall. East India reported normal rainfall while rainfall in Northeast India was in excess.
Let us have a look at the rainfall figures in last two months across the country.
