Hills and plains of North India are expected to witness a prolonged spell of weather activity for the next four to five days. Two weather systems will affect the region simultaneously.
A western disturbance (WD) is currently residing over Pakistan and Jammu and Kashmir. In addition to this, a cyclonic circulation is hovering above central Pakistan and adjoining areas. These two back to back systems will keep the northern hills and plains active in terms of weather activity for the next five days.
Currently, a WD is causing light precipitation in parts of Jammu and Kashmir. Barring the current light rain activity, the region has been experiencing fairly good weather conditions with clear skies and bright sunshine. Temperature in most tourist hotspots is settling above normal. On Thursday, Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 28°C (4°C above normal), Gulmarg recorded 19°C (5°C above normal), and Pahalgam recorded close to 25°C (which is again 5°C above normal).
But these conditions will be interrupted by a prolonged spell, which will cause weather activity of varying intensity and variety in the region, starting today. Temperatures will go down by as much as 10°C and will settle below normal for a while. Normally in the month of May, such weather activity lasts for about two days or so in Jammu and Kashmir. But the incoming long spell is unusual and will surely affect tourism in the state.
Plains of North India
Coming to the plains of north India, initially the region will remain on the outer peripheral of the weather system. This is expected to cause dust storms late in the evening or night, starting tomorrow. Weather activity in Delhi-NCR will peak between May 11 and 12. The effect will start withering away around May 13 and is expected to disappear till May 14.
