Plains of North India have started dipping the night temperatures to single digit. Nip in the air has commenced little ahead of time at some places. Successive passage of western disturbances, dumping widespread snow in the mountains has resulted sharp drop of mercury levels. Cold winds blowing down the slopes, coupled with moderate breeze has raised the chill factor. Clear skies during night facilitate easy escape of radiations adding sting in the air.
Many places over Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi have recorded minimum temperature of under 10deg Celsius. Base observatory at Delhi measured lowest of the season so far, at 9.6deg today morning. Bhatinda in Punjab tops the table with lowest of 6.4deg, 3deg below normal. It was closely followed by Una in Himachal Pradesh, clocking 6.8deg Celsius. Hissar, Karnal and Narnaul in Haryana also recorded below normal temperature between 8-9 deg Celsius.
Churu was the coldest for the 2nd consecutive day in Rajasthan observing minimum of 7 deg Celsius. Sikar, Bhilwara and Pilani also hovered below normal staying between 8 & 9 deg.
Anticyclonic winds over Rajasthan has taken the chill deep in to Madhya Pradesh, as well. Nowgong, Umaria and Raisen slipped in to single digit minimum, ranging between 8 and 9 deg Celsius.
Western disturbance is moving across the mountains of North India. Hills will have clouds, rain and snow over the next 3 days. General clearance is expected on 21st Nov and stay good thereafter. Accordingly, further fall of minimum temperature will be arrested briefly. Contrarily, marginal rise may be observed at few places in the plains of North India. Night temperatures are likely to plunge again from 21st Nov onward. Single digit mercury is expected to last till month end at many places.
