Minimum temperatures across Northeast India have plunged to new levels. They have been settling in single digits for the last few days, even reporting some record low temperatures.

Unlike North India, the northeastern parts of the country do not observe cold weather conditions. The region usually witnesses minimum temperatures in double digits, ranging between 10°C and 20°C during December.

On December 28, Kohima in Nagaland recorded night temperature at 1°C which is the lowest minimum on record. Similarly, Aizawl in Mizoram also recorded 6.9°C on Monday morning that was again the lowest in last five years.

According to Skymet Meteorology Division in India, cold and dry northwesterly winds are blowing over Northeast India in absence of any active Western Disturbance. These strong winds have kept night temperatures on the lower side.

However, we expect night temperatures to rise during next 24 hours. Presently a cyclonic circulation is prevailing over Tripura and adjoining areas which will change the wind pattern from cold northwesterlies to moist easterlies in span of 24 hours.

The weather system is likely to get more marked and is expected to give some light weather activity over Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by December 31.
