Sikar shivers at zero degree once again, situation to improve

The Indo-Gangetic plains are renowned for witnessing chilly weather during the winter months. Bone-chilling breezes, thick fog layer, and people wrapped up in woolens is what is seen during the month of January. And this is what can be seen in parts of the desert state as well.

The intense cold condition continues to affect parts of North India with Rajasthan’s Sikar recording its minimum temperature at zero degree Celsius today. With this, cold wave conditions continue to affect the life in the city. However, fog remained far from showing up.

Generally, North Rajasthan records very low minimum temperatures during the winter months and January is the coldest for the state. If the minimum temperatures recorded during the entire month is calculated, Sikar has recorded zero degree Celsius twice this season, the first being on January 3.

Moreover, the minimum temperatures had remained mainly under the 5-degree Celsius mark almost throughout the month with only two occasions recording minimums around 7 degrees Celsius.

According to the weathermen at Skymet Weather, there are various reasons for these dropping minimums.

Firstly, whenever icy cold northerly winds travel from the Western Himalayan region towards Rajasthan, it leads to a drop in the temperatures. Secondly, many parts of Rajasthan are desert areas. Thus with Sikar being in close vicinity to the desert area, the sand cools down rapidly during the night resulting in the drop in temperatures to freezing point.

However, the weathermen also state that witnessing chilling temperatures is not an exception for Sikar, Alwar, Churu, Bikaner and Sri Ganganagar. Sometimes, during the winter months of December and January, the temperatures go down even below the 0 degrees in these regions.

Now, the minimums are expected to start witnessing a rising trend in Sikar and adjoining areas and this will be due to the change in the winds’ direction. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to approach the Western Himalayan region and is likely to induce a cyclonic circulation over Rajasthan leading to the flow of relatively warm winds from the southwest direction.
