Significant drop in night temperatures brings relief in North India

February 26, 2015 3:50 PM |

Weather in DelhiDelhi and North India witnessed a nip in the air on Thursday morning after one week of high temperatures. People in Delhi and North India had been sweltering under very warm conditions as both day and night temperatures were recording 4-5 degrees above the monthly average.

The last Western Disturbance brought a prolonged wet spell in the hills of North India. Weather activity trickled down to the foothills and then to the plains with a lag of two days. The rain belt covered Punjab, Haryana and Delhi by Tuesday morning. The region witnessed fairly widespread to scattered rainfall for 48 hours. Even hailstorm was reported in isolated parts like Ludhiana and Meerut.

Weather has now started clearing up with minimums plummeting in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Minimum temperature in Delhi dropped from 19°C on Wednesday to 14.5°C in just 24 hours on Thursday. Temperatures witnessed a drop in Amritsar,  Patiala, Ludhiana, Ambala, Hisar, Karnal and Kurukshetra as well.

A clear sky and reversal of winds from warm and moist southeasterlies to cool northwesterlies facilitated drop in minimum temperature. As predicted by Skymet, maximum temperature also dropped marginally but is still remaining above normal at 28.1°C.

Temperatures will maintain levels for another 24 hours after which another Western Disturbance will start affecting weather from February 28 onward.
