A fresh Western Disturbance has approached the Western Himalayas. Already the region is seeing an overcast sky and isolated light rains have already commenced over Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh for the last 24 hours.

Now, we expect a gradual increase in rain activities over these areas. Snowfall is also likely to commence over these areas by today evening over many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and parts of Uttarakhand.

Gradually, by tomorrow we expect most parts of Western Himalayas to start receiving rain and snowfall activities. Moderate to heavy snowfall is expected on January 7 and 8 over many parts of these states. Places like Shimla, Nainital, Mussoorie and Srinagar are likely to receive rain and snowfall.

By January 9 i.e. Thursday, the weather will start clearing up as the weather system will move away eastwards. Weather will clear up from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, however, Uttarakhand may continue to receive scattered rain and snow until the afternoon of January 9. After the passage of Western Disturbance, the temperatures will drop significantly over the hilly states.

As a matter of fact, this upcoming weather activity might lead to blockading of major highways in Jammu and Kashmir due to heavy snow. Traffic jams, landslides, mudslides and avalanche are quite a possibility during this time. People who are heading towards hilly destinations are advised to take precaution while travelling.
