HEAT-WAVE-13-04-2016---600

Severe heatwave has enveloped Gujarat, with mercury soaring to new levels. In fact, most districts of the state are reeling under heatwave conditions, especially over Saurashtra and Kutch regions.

So much so that most districts of the state that were recording day temperatures in near upper 30’s are now witnessing the temperatures 40 degrees or beyond. In fact, isolated pockets of the state are even closer to 45°C in the last 24 hours. Here the maximums are even settling 6 to 8 degrees above the normal.

As per Skymet Weather, the reason for the prevailing hot and dry weather can be associated with the inflow of north-northeasterly winds blowing from the Sindh and Baluchistan region in Pakistan. Here, the normal day temperatures are already high and the consistent dry and warm weather is influencing the temperatures in Gujarat to rise further.

In the last 24 hours as well, Surendranagar in Gujarat was the hottest city in the country. Let’s take a look at the table depicting the districts that are influenced by heatwave conditions.

Moreover, for the next 48 hours, temperatures are expected to remain the same or even rise further. Thereafter, a change in the wind pattern is expected and the currently hot and dry northeasterly winds will be replaced by the westerly and southwesterly winds.

As per their nature, these winds will be coming from the west or southwest direction from the Arabian Sea and hence, will be comparatively cooler. This will be resulting in marginal drop in the current scorching temperatures. Though the possibility of abatement of a severe heatwave is high, but heatwave conditions will still continue to persist in the state.
