Severe Heat Wave To Continue Over Rajasthan, Relief Likely On Weekend

May 27, 2024 4:49 PM |

The Desert area of Rajasthan has literally been on fire for the last few days. Border posts of Barmer, Jaisalmer, Phalodi, and Bikaner are getting roasted in extreme temperatures of 49°-50°C. Phalodi has touched sizzling 50°C and Barmer breached 49°C. Searing heat is likely to continue till the weekend and expect little relief, thereafter.

There is no active western disturbance passing across the northern parts to bring some change in the pattern. The heat low is well marked, but in the absence of any system remains dormant. Dry cyclonic circulation with the heat low is accumulating the heat on a regular basis and the mercury is rising, through the roof. Severe heat waves will continue over the state, with the western half getting punished, more than the east.

Across the border also, it is extremely hot. Parts of Pakistan are breaching 50°C mark, more often than the border posts.  Jacobabad in Sind (Pakistan) has touched 52°C, yesterday. A few other places are crossing the 50°C mark: Khanpur-50.2°C, Pad Idan- 50°C, Sibi-50°C and Rohri-49.4°C. Wind pattern is northwesterly to westerly. This oppressive heat is getting transported along the border posts. Advection of heat is extending further to the central and eastern parts of the state, as well.

A cyclonic circulation is likely to come up over Central Pakistan and adjoining parts of West Rajasthan, around 30-31 May. The depth of circulation may increase to about 5,000’-7000’ above the mean sea level. This powerful feature will draw strong southwesterly winds, from the Arabian Sea, across North Gujarat and South Rajasthan. This pattern may not trigger any thunderstorm /dust storm over the region but the southwesterly winds will increase the moisture content, over the region.

Dust-raising winds are quite likely over the farther posts of the state. The rise in the humidity levels will absorb the extreme heat, albeit partially. Drop in temperature, ranging between 4°-6°C is likely on and after 31st May 2024. The marginal relief may last for 3-4 days, between 31st and 03rd June. Mercury will, once again, rise during the next week.
