May 22, 2024 3:31 PM |

Heatwave conditions during the month of May and early June are quite common for the plains of North India. Arid regions of West Rajasthan, Border areas of Punjab and contiguous parts of Haryana with Rajasthan are heading for extreme temperatures, in excess of 47°C, over the next one week. The current heat spell is making a difference in terms of longevity and the severe heat is persisting for over one week.

There is no active western disturbance moving across the northern mountains. Whatever systems pass, are feeble and shallow. Even, the mountains are not having any significant activity. Also, there is a powerful pre-monsoon system coming up over the Bay Of Bengal. It may even become a storm, the first one of this season. These system suck the available energy and the wind flow gets directed towards these systems. Accordingly, the dry spell is likely to get prolonged and may get extended till this month end.

West Rajasthan has recorded temperature between 45°-47°C: Barmer-46°C, Churu-46.8°C, Jaisalmer-45.7°C.  Neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana are no better.  Sirsa has recorded 47.8°C,  the highest temperature in the country. Narnaul, Hisar, and Bathinda also have breached the 46°C mark. With the heat getting accumulated further, mercury levels may reach 47°-48°C over large parts of Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab.  Places at risk include Bathinda, Firozpur, Fazilka, Muktsar, Sirsa, Fatehabad, Bhiwani, Narnaul, Churu, Barmer, Jaisalmer, Phalodi, Bikaner, Ganganagar, Suratgarh, Hanumangarh, Anupgarh, Pilani.  Heat belt may extend further to cover even the eastern parts of Rajasthan Haryana and Punjab.

There is no let-up likely till the month's end. Temperatures will remain in excess of 45°C over large areas, for days together. The current heat spell may go on record as the longest one of recent times. Oppressive heat may get transported further ahead to reach parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, as well.
