Severe Delhi Pollution to improve, may slip to poor

Delhi Pollution 1

During the past 48 hours, Delhi and NCR have observed severe pollution levels across many parts. As of now, Ghaziabad is considered as one of the most polluted region.

The reason for this hike in the pollution levels could be attributed to the light winds which are blowing over the national capital since the last two days.

The prevailing Western Disturbance over Jammu and Kashmir has induced a cyclonic circulation over western parts of Uttar Pradesh. In the wake of this weather system, humidity levels have also surged over Delhi and its adjoining regions of Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad and Gurugram.

Furthermore, this season minimum temperatures too marked a significant drop. Consequently, light winds, high humidity and low minimum temperatures contribute for the creation of fog.

Smoke, dust particles and other pollutants that are present in the atmosphere cling to water vapor existing in the fog. Together they make a layer of pollution which can be called as smog near the earth surface.

The winds continue to be very light; therefore this layer of pollution will persist. Fortunately the Western Disturbance has moved away but another weak Western Disturbance is approaching the Western Himalayas. Thus, it will not have much influence on the northern plains including Delhi and NCR.

As per Skymet Weather, the wind speed will increase and commence from northwest direction, leading to decrease in humidity levels. So, the pollution levels and intensity of fog will start sinking from tomorrow.

Though in terms of pollution, it will not be a significant improvement, the severe category may change to poor.
