The first cyclone of the season, Ockhi has been the talk of the hour for quite some time now. The weather system has been churning in the warm waters and has been witnessing rapid intensification. In fact, Ockhi has already intensified into a severe cyclone and is heading west northwestwards.
The weather system is at present over 110 km NNE of Minicoy and 290 km of Amini Devi. During the next 24 hours, the system is expected to move across Lakshadweep Islands.

Ockhi has already battered Minicoy Island in Lakshadweep with torrential rains of a whopping 191 mm. Not only this, Kanyakumari was also throttled with hefty showers during the last 24 hours.

Now, the Lakshadweep Islands should brace for more heavy rains as the cyclone nears. During the next 24 hours, heavy to very heavy rains are likely over Lakshadweep Islands. Areas of Minicoy and Amini Devi are expected to see some torrential rains as well.

The possibility of extremely heavy rains in some areas is also quite likely. Not only this, even after 24 hours, rains will remain on the heavier side and will gradually decrease thereafter.
Fishermen have been advised to not venture out in the sea at all costs. The sea conditions will remain rough to very rough. As far as the wind conditions are concerned, the wind speed may gust up to 110-120 kmph in some areas as well.
Considerable damage is expected to occur over the Lakshadweep Islands. Uprooting of trees and power lines is a possibility and inundation may occur in areas.
