Northeast Monsoon

Severe Cyclone Kyarr has further intensified into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm. Today, at 5:30 IST, it was located near latitude 16.5’ N and longitude 70.8’ E over the East Central Arabian Sea about 270 km west/southwest of Ratnagiri, 360 km south/southwest of Mumbai and 1740 km east/southeast of Salalah in Oman.

According to the Weathermen, the Cyclonic Storm would keep moving in west/northwest direction towards Oman and within the next 24 hours stands a chance to become Extremely Severe Cyclone.

In the wake of this movement, strong winds to the tune of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph would affect the Maharashtra Coast, while 30-40 kmph strong winds would blow over the Karnataka Coast. The height of waves would also be in the order of 10 to 12 feet, reaching up to 14 to 15 feet in some areas. Hence, fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea for another 24 hours.

In terms of rainfall activities, light to moderate rain with few heavy spells would continue over North Coastal Karnataka, Goa, and South Konkan and Goa for another 24 hours. However, heavy to extremely heavy rain is ruled out for the Indian Coast now.

By October 27, as the system would move further westwards, its impact would start reducing over the Indian Coast. By October 28 the speed of winds would ease down and vary between 30 and 40 kmph, gusting 50 to kmph only.

After the next 24 hours, the system would gradually weaken into a Very Severe Cyclonic Storm and later into Severe Cyclone before touching the Oman Coast, most probably by October 31.
