September, the last monsoon month, has started on a promising note.  Despite marginal shortfall in daily rainfall, on couple of days, spread and intensity was able to arrest the  pan India deficiency at 9%. Courtesy, heavy rainfall yesterday, the deficiency has now dropped to 8%.

Also, 07th September was the rainiest day in the last 45 days, measuring 12.4mm rainfall. Prior to this, 23rdJuly recorded 14.1mm, nearly a repeat of previous day when it clocked 14.4mm on 22ndJuly.

The low pressure area, after crossing the coast lashed central parts of the country, particularly Maharashtra and Gujarat to scale a double digit rainfall.  Earlier, monsoon had begun on a wetter note and opening month of June registered 110% of long period average (LPA).

However, this surplus was subsumed in the 1st week of July itself and the month ended on a withered note at 93% of LPA. Seasonal rainfall further dwindled in August, which failed miserably and ended with a huge shortfall of 24%, the largest since 2009. Season 2021 had the distinction of flawing both the core monsoon months, July and August.

September looks like saving the grace, albeit limited, with decent rainfall, at least in the 1st half of the month which appears to be better than the later half.  2019 earned the repute of rainiest September ever by amassing 152% rainfall of LPA.  September 2021 appears to be 2nd best since 2007 and is expected to gather rainfall in excess of 115% of LPA.
