The national capital witnessed the second rainiest August in the last 15 years. The city observatory at Safdarjung recorded 393.3mm of rainfall between the 01st and 30th August 2024. Only light rain is expected on the last day of the month and therefore, the total may not change much. Still, this is the second-highest amount for the month, next to 455.1mm in August 2010. All-time record high for the month stands against August 1961 with a deluge of 455.1mm. Out of 30 days, so far, it rained on 26 days and the month registered 16 rainy days, when the rainfall was more than 2.5mm, in 24 hours. The highest rainfall during this month was 108mm on the very first day of the month.
Month of September is much drier for Delhi, as compared to the rainiest months of July and August. Normal rainfall for the record observatory at Safdarjung is 123.5mm, nearly half of August. September also is the month of monsoon withdrawal for Delhi and it retreats anytime between the 20th and 25th of September. Exceptions are always there, of late withdrawal.
September is starting on a promising note. Straight from day one, decent showers can be expected for one week, with patchy rains for a day or two in between. Good showers are likely on the 02nd and 03rd of September. A twist in the weather conditions with a cloudy sky, moderate breeze and intermittent showers will raise the comfort level in the opening days of September.
