Season's best snowfall in Srinagar expected

Residents of Srinagar have been eagerly waiting for widespread heavy snowfall in January that would leave the area draped in white blanket. The first twelve days of the 40-day harshest winter spell went without any snowfall in the Kashmir Valley.

Season’s first snowfall in Srinagar happened on January 3 when it received 2.8 mm of rainfall. The minimum temperature settled above the freezing point at 2.2°C. The twin resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam also received moderate snowfall during that time.

Fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir and other hills of North India is expected on account of the Western Disturbance (WD) that will influence weather tonight. While a weak Western Disturbance has already given scattered rain over J&K, the approaching WD is likely to be more active and give widespread rain and snow over J&K and Himachal Pradesh by tomorrow. Rain and snow intensity will reduce over these areas by January 29.

This weather system will also give light rain over Punjab, North Rajasthan and North Haryana on 29th January.

After the passage of WD, the winds will again change direction and will result in a decrease in minimum temperature over plains of North India. Due to this winter chill will return to Delhi, Haryana and Punjab during the first week February.

During next two days, maximum temperature over Punjab and hills of North India will decrease but will not lead to cold day conditions.
